Stepping into the studio one final time. It's hard to believe that it's already been nearly 7 months since we lost the legendary Toby Keith , who passed away back in February after a 2 year battle with stomach cancer. The Big Dog Daddy was honored recently with an all-star tribute concert at Bridgestone Arena, featuring artists like Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, HARDY, and many more paying tribute to Toby, his music and his legacy. And one of the most heartbreaking moments of the show came when video of Toby's final recording session was shown for the first time. The video featured Toby stepping into the studio to record his version of Joe Diffie's hit "Ships That Don't Come In," a duet with Luke Combs that was released on HARDY's
HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE , a 17-song project honoring the late, great Joe Diffie. But the fact that the song, which reflects on being grateful for the gifts that you've been blessed with, ended up being Toby's final recording makes the track especially poignant and a fitting tribute to the country music legend. And now, after being debuted at the tribute concert, the video is finally being released for the first time. Speaking on the opportunity to record the song with Toby, Luke Combs spoke about his desire to carry on his legacy: "To be on a song with Toby was a no-brainer when it got presented to me. That was something I had always hoped to do but never knew if it would happen or not. It being one of Joe’s songs, especially this one, made it even better; he was there the night I got inducted into the Opry and actually gave me my Opry member award. I grew up listening to both of those guys’ music, so to be a part of this version of the song and it now be Toby’s last recording is kind of hard to put into words. Country music misses them greatly, but I hope we’re doing justice to continue what they started."
It's bittersweet to see Toby in the studio for what turned out to be the final time, but we should all be thankful that we got one final recording from the country music legend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-qc4f94T8E
