Tampa Bay Head Coach Todd Bowles Refers To Washington Commanders As “Redskins” Multiple Times During Press Conference

The NFL team in our nation's capital hasn't been called the "Redskins" since 2019, but no one apparently told Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles that. Despite some pushback to reinstate the team name , and even a head coach in Dan Quinn that has worn non-official Redskins apparel to official NFL press conferences, the Redskins no longer exist. Back in 2020, the franchise known as the Washington Redskins kneeled to the public pressure and retired the “Redskins,” opting to switch to the creatively coined “Washington Football Team.” The original name had long been criticized for its potentially controversial nature, and when all of the other “canceling” went down back in 2020, the team went along with it. Then after two years as a generically named team, the football team in the country’s capital changed their name to the Commanders - and there have even been rumors that they'll drop that name too sometime in the future. But it appears Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles isn't ready to drop the old name... as in the one that was controversial and didn't make it out of 2020. In a press conference over the weekend, Bowles was asked about his team's week one matchup against the Washington Commanders, and specifically their rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Coach Bowles wanted to make it clear that his team would be prepping for the entire team and not just the person who was playing QB, and that made sense... but calling the team in Washington the "Redskins" didn't: "I think if you find yourself just facing the rookie quarterback, the other 10 guys are going to kill you so we’re facing the Redskins…we don’t look at it as facing the rookie quarterback, we’re trying to beat the Redskins." https://twitter.com/JayDanielsMVP/status/1830750560200352239 Well good luck beating the Redskins coach, because you're playing the Commanders . Maybe it was just a mix up, or maybe it was a little subtle-yet-intentional jab at the rename? He did end up using it twice in a matter of a couple of sentences... Bowles played for the Washington Redskins in the late '80s and then after a one-season stint with the 49ers, he came back to the Washington for a couple more seasons. So maybe it's just a case of old habits die hard?
