The story around Tyreek Hill's detainment yesterday before the Miami Dolphins game continues to unfold. NFL fans woke up to some shocking news yesterday before the first full football Sunday when a video was released of the Dolphins star wide receiver getting handcuffed by police. He was pulled over as he was on his way to Miami's season opener at Hard Rock Stadium, and he was quickly put into handcuffs after
officers threatened to break his car window if he didn't get out. Here's the clip in case you missed it: https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1832795681188184474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1832795681188184474%7Ctwgr%5E3b9d19ac7d81850158dffca5e4b29f9a50057f8f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2024%2F09%2F09%2Fvideo-shows-police-officer-threatening-to-break-dolphins-wr-tyreek-hills-window-while-ordering-him-out-of-his-car%2F There's still a lot of confusion around the incident, and both the NFL's Player Association and the Miami Dade Police Department have opened investigations into what went down. Hill was allegedly pulled over for a traffic violation initially, and was later hit with citations for a seatbelt violation and careless driving. He wasn't technically ever arrested, and still managed to play in the game later in the day (he caught 7 passed for
130 yards and a touchdown ). Hill was obviously asked about the incident after the game, where he said he both wants to be a cop one day and wants to somehow spin all of this into a positive: "I want to be a cop one day. I got a state trooper hat, all that. So I gotta lot of respect for cops. But obviously everybody has bad apples in every situation. So I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends." https://twitter.com/AdamHBeasley/status/1832879994772566432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1832879994772566432%7Ctwgr%5E3b9d19ac7d81850158dffca5e4b29f9a50057f8f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2024%2F09%2F09%2Fvideo-shows-police-officer-threatening-to-break-dolphins-wr-tyreek-hills-window-while-ordering-him-out-of-his-car%2F It seems as though it would only be a matter of time before the Miami-Dade Police came out and apologized for the incident and dropped the citations, much like the run-in with the law that PGA golfer Scottie Scheffler had in Louisville before this year's PGA Championship. However, the Miami-Dade Police Union issued a statement about Tyreek Hill being handcuffed, and the wording that they used made it sound as though they are placing much of the blame on the Dolphins player for how everything went down:
"Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great danger. Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave." As you can see, they made it clear that Hill was the one that was being uncooperative, and later conceded that the NFL speedster was allowed to leave the scene without being arrested. However, the wording that they used throughout their statement definitely reads a little backhanded. Especially this next part, where the Police Union continued by saying the investigation will "run its course" and yet again placed the blame for everything on Hill, who they suggest "initiated this unfortunate incident:"
"While we wait for the investigation to run its course, based on what we know, we stand with the actions of our officers but look forward to further open communication moving forward. While we are confident in the actions that led to the stop of Mr. Hill, as with any investigation, we will wait for all of the facts to come out, along with any explanation Mr. Hill may have for his actions that initiated this unfortunate incident." https://twitter.com/AndySlater/status/1833172383202414742
