Auburn QB Payton Thorne Had Fans Venmo Requesting Him To Cover Their Gambling Losses Following Loss To California

Sports gambling might be getting a little out of hand. The act of putting money down on a game is supposed to be a fun and exciting way to enhance the sports entertainment experience. But sometimes, people get a little too into the weeds with it (they're often called "degenerates") and decide that if their bet loses, the college kid that they bet on needs to hear about it. That obviously seems a little obnoxious, right? Well, it's exactly what Auburn Tigers quarterback Payton Thorne is going through right now, and has gone through often in his career. Auburn has started the year 1-1, and they basically got upset by a California Golden Bears team (now in the ACC) that no one really expected to contend with the Tigers. Thorne threw an abysmal four interceptions in the 21-14 loss, so many fans put the weight of the team's loss on his shoulders. And when the young QB joined onto
The Next Round show this morning, he was asked about the pressure that he faces being a quarterback in the SEC. The Auburn QB said that he gets criticism from every direction you could think of, and he does his best to block it out: "Obviously everyone says that you just don't listen to it and all that. Sometimes that's easier said than done because in today's world, they come at you in all different angles. You hear it verbally, that's probably the least one. Just walking down the street, you hear it sometimes. Then the social medias, they hit you on Venmo, all types of stuff. You just have to block it out. You have to go back to where your foundation is in your life. For me, that's my faith and my family. Just doing that but also focusing on what's next. There's nothing we can do about Saturday, but I can handle today."
Wait a second... did he say Venmo? The hosts of the show - at least one of them - were a little confused about the Venmo comment from Thorne. So they asked what he meant by fans "hitting him up on Venmo," and if they were sending him cash after. The Auburn QB said it's actually the exact opposite : "They're definitely not sending cash. It's funny... when they lose money, they want the money back. But when they win money on a parlay, no one is ever sending me any money." https://twitter.com/NextRoundLive/status/1833518776417194262?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1833518776417194262%7Ctwgr%5Ee87f82548e8254cf97d5adf8235629986d42ca0d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.outkick.com%2Fsports%2Fpayton-thorne-auburn-fans-venmo-requests-after-losses Sheesh. Officially, people need to leave college kids like Payton Thorne alone. It's not his fault that you wagered your paycheck on an Auburn - California football game. Unofficially though... Venmo requesting an athlete for the money you lost on a parlay is next-level trolling. That's pretty funny, but still feel bad for young guys like Thorne.
