Margo Price is laying down a new one and looping in one of her friends, the legendary Billy Strings . Last fall, Margo released her critically acclaimed record Strays II , a continuation of Strays, which was inspired by a six-day mushroom trip Price and her husband experienced. The music on these two records leaned into different aspects of her sound, pushing the boundaries and drawing new inspiration from genres outside of country music. While that led to two stellar projects, Price is ready to return to her other country music roots. "Too Stoned To Cry,"  written by Andrew Combs and produced by Beau Bedford, marks Price's return to country music. The sound of this new single signifies what is to come in 2025 as Price prepares to release new music and shows why country music comforts her.

"It was such a joy to work with Billy on this song. He really nailed the vocals and laid down a beautiful lead. I have wanted to record this song for years now, ever since I heard the writer Andrew Combs sing it. My buddy Beau Bedford and I had been in the studio together working on an Orville Peck track, and I asked him to produce this single for me.

He put together a really great band – Beau and I, plus my husband Jeremy Ivey played acoustic, Aksel Coe on drums, Misa Arriaga on Bass, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Joey McClellan on electric. Once we got Billy to add his guitar and singing, I knew this song was gonna be a special recording."

From the opening whine of the steel guitar, you know that "Too Stoned To Cry" is a sad country song that will make you oh so happy. The song's title perfectly lays out what the lyrical content holds. The narrator of the song is finding himself in a valley of emotions and feels like they are losing at life. As they spiral, they find substances as a way to escape this feeling, but the numbness keeps them from processing and being able to move on. While they can acknowledge this isn't the best point of their life, the "out" of catching a buzz keeps them from acting irrationally.
    "There's whiskey and wine
    And pills for the pain
Fast easy women and a little cocaine
I'm walking the line between hell bent and high
I ain't happy just too stoned to cry..." Strings and Price make for a killer duo on this track, and their voices blend flawlessly during the shared choruses. This next chapter of music that Price is gearing up to enter will be her most authentic yet. Although Price has pushed for her vision to shine on each of her singles and records, sometimes, you have to play the game a little. But, with this forthcoming project, she's ensuring she does not sacrifice anything. "When I first came on the scene, I was a countryfied, hard-headed, whiskey drinkin' nobody who was pissed off at the establishment. All of that's still true, except for the whiskey drinkin' part. If anything, now that I've lived for a while inside of the establishment, I'm even more pissed off. I've let some people go, I'm still fighting with others to let me be myself, but I know, I'm gonna make this next record the way I want to make it, no matter what it takes."
Price noted on her Substack that she plans to debut some of her new singles while performing at FarmAid later this month. "Good news is, I’ll be playing lots of these new, unreleased tunes at my upcoming performance at Farm Aid back in Saratoga Springs, NY on Sept 21st. In the meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this sad a** country song." Fire it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpnG6rciF0U
