Sports broadcaster are likely often told to go out and break a leg, but Joe Buck might have taken that advice a little too literally. One of the voices of
Monday Night Football on ESPN and a man who has been behind so many memorable calls in sports is going through it right now. Did he mess up during a broadcast? Nope. Was he forced to give up one of his announcing gigs? Not that either. Buck accidentally shattered the ankle of his wife, Michelle Beisner-Buck, in a freak accident out on the golf course. Joe Buck and his wife put out a video yesterday explaining what went down on the fateful day of July 7th when Michelle's ankle got crushed. The couple were apparently playing golf together in Cabo San Lucas, because around that time, the sports broadcaster was getting ready to play in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe. According to Buck, he was about to hit a drive on the 10th hole when some "head-standing" that Michelle was doing off to the side ended up contributing to what the couple is calling a freak accident:
"She did a headstand at the end of the tee box for good luck out and to my left, and at the exact moment that I was teeing off, she decided with her feet in the air to do the splits, thereby dropping her right leg a little to the side, right in my line of fire. And I hit a golf ball, Taylor Made with little designs on it, into the inside of her right ankle and shattered it. Total freak accident." Beisner-Buck was forced to do six weeks in a hard cast, followed up by two and a half weeks in a walking boot. At one point in the video below, she takes over the conversation and explains what has made her injury that much more difficult to recover from:
"The cherry on top... not only was it a shatter and an impact break, but there's a nerve that runs right under your ankle bone called the tibial nerve. That was severely damaged, (and) you cannot work on your nerve damage if you can't move your foot." The Buck family tried out non-surgical options with no luck, so that's why Michelle ended up having to go in for surgery. She technically had her tibial nerve decompressed in an effort for her nerves to start working again. And as you might imagine, the whole thing has made Joe Buck feel awful:
"Needless to say, my guilt is still off the charts. I wake up still in the middle of the night hearing that sound and it makes me sick.
