Honky tonk gold. Last Friday, Miranda Lambert released her new studio album Postcards From Texas , which I've had on repeat. She said time and again leading up to the release, and even now, that she wanted it to be a tribute to her home state of Texas and all of the country music that has inspired her over the years. From the scathing divorce anthem “Alimony” to heartfelt ballads about heartbreak and love lost like “Run,” the album is dripped in waling steel guitar and Miranda’s authentic, honest songwriting, and
Postcards From Texas is a beautiful collection of songs that pay homage to who Miranda is and where she comes from. The 14-song tracklist also includes a duet with Parker McCollum called "Sante Fe," which should definitely be a radio single at some point, in addition to Miranda's rendition of David Allan Coe's "Living on the Run." It's certainly an updated, very Miranda version of the classic, which was included on Coe's 1976 Longhaired Redneck album. While not necessarily a fan-favorite hit from that record, it perfectly captured his outlaw spirit and renegade country star ways. Lyrically, I think it's likely something Miranda resonates with deeply, and I love that she chose to close this Texas love letter of an album with a cover like this. Oh, and a fun fact for you today, Miranda's mom, Bev, used to babysit Coe's four-year-old daughter in Dallas back in the day. I've been listening to it nonstop over the last several days, and felt like this cover in particular deserved its own post. It's not easy to take a song that's almost 50 years old and make it feel fresh and relevant for a new generation of music fans, but Miranda did that and then some... It's easily one of the best studio covers I've heard this year. If you're a fan of genuine country music that's as timeless now as it was back in the 70's, this version is for you. Miranda absolutely nailed it, and I think she certainly did Coe proud... check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UZynUy0UMQ
