A woman after my own heart. Of course, Miranda Lambert is known for her feisty, fiery attitude, and first made a name for herself with rowdy, female anthems like "Kerosene" and "Gunpowder & Lead," which are still some of her best work, in my very humble opinion. But of course, as an artist and songwriter, she had a lot more to say, and early on, she was worried she might get put into a box before she had time to show everyone all that she had to offer. And in an interview with Tom on the
Q with Tom Power podcast recently, where she of course talked about her new record Postcards From Texas , Miranda talked about those earlier years and how her 2009 Revolution album helped her show a new side and depth: "They get rowdy... at the beginning, I really got almost pushed in a corner, because I had 'Kerosene,' and I had 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,' and I had 'Gunpowder & Lead,' and it felt like all the words that were being used to describe this new artist coming on the scene were like, firebrand, and feisty. And that's great, it was me, you know, 'She's a little pistol,' all that's true, but I had so much more to offer and I was like oh no, am I just gonna be known as this crazy girl born with a shotgun forever? I have so much more to say as a writer and an artist, and 'Revolution' really turned that around for me.
The record 'Revolution, and 'The House That Built Me' was a huge part of that. Those songs like that are still such staples, they're my bread and butter, they're staples in my show and they're still such a part of my personality." But the best part came when Miranda talked about how she got that sassy, fiery personality, noting that her grandma was "drinking Crown and Coke at one o'clock and waving her finger at somebody" until the day she died. Miranda has said before that she's also a Miller Lite girl "with an RBF," and I feel like I would fit right in with the Lambert ladies: "I come by it naturally... my grandma, until the day she died, was drinking Crown and Coke at one o'clock and waving her finger at somebody.
My mom's very feisty and vibrant, so I feel like I come by that naturally, But as a songwriter I can't just be shoved in this corner." Grandma's, especially Southern grandmas, are simply the best, and hearing just that little bit about Miranda's grandma makes so much sense and it sounds like she was a great lady with an amazing personality. And while I completely understand that and agree with her, and obviously think she's proved herself to be an extremely talented, well-rounded artist, that fiery, take no sh*t Miranda edge will always be my favorite.
