Shoutout to the heroes in this video that stepped up to take down a lone gunman at Yellowstone National Park back in July. In case you didn't hear about it, Yellowstone Park Rangers were forced into action on the 4th of July when a park employee threatened to kill a coworker and carry out a mass shooting at Canyon Village's employee dining room. Samson Fussner, the man who was eventually killed in a shootout with park rangers, was the one who made the threats and briefly held another Yellowstone employee hostage. The incident is still being investigated at the federal level by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And earlier today, Yellowstone National Park released body camera footage from the violent interaction as a part of a
20-minute community briefing . The clip featured the park's detailed explanation of how things went down on the 4th of July: "Just after midnight on July 4, the Yellowstone Interagency Communications Center received a report that a concession employee had been unwillingly held by an individual for several hours on the late evening of July 3. The individual, later identified by NPS law enforcement officers as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, also a concession employee, allegedly came to the employee’s residence in Canyon Village armed with a knife and handgun. The report also indicated that Fussner threatened to kill the employee and target the Employee Dining Room in Canyon Village the following day." Following the threat, the National Park Service called in their special response team and positioned twenty NPS law enforcement officers in and around the area of the Canyon Lodge. And early that next morning, Fussner - armed with a semi-automatic rifle - came out of the woods and engaged with an officer. One officer was hit and suffered from a lower extremity injury. Soon after, another response team member returned fire at Fussner and eliminated him as a threat. Some of the moments, names and other details have been redacted from the footage, but for the most part, you can see how it all went down in the community briefing (which includes the body camera footage) that was posted by Yellowstone. Just a fair warning, the images and video might be disturbing to view for some: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZd-_JoR_sQ
