Who's cutting onions in here? Sometimes it's easy to forget just how many great songs Brad Paisley had back in the day. He was one of the biggest names in country music in the late '90s and early 2000s with songs like "Mud On The Tires," "I'm Gonna Miss Her," "We Danced," and many more. But the West Virginia native scored his first #1 hit back in 1999 with "He Didn't Have To Be," which was the second single from his debut album. The song is a heartwarming tribute to a stepfather who came into a child's life and stepped up when he didn't have to:
"And then all of a sudden, oh, it seemed so strange to me How we went from something's missin' to a family Lookin' back all I can say about all the things he did for me Is I hope I'm at least half the dad that he didn't have to be" And though the song is now 25 years old, it clearly still hits home for the families who've found the type of relationship that Brad sings about - like this one young man who performed the song for his new stepdad at his mom's wedding. Video posted to TikTok shows a then-six year old named Justin singing "He Didn't Have To Be" at the wedding as his proud parents look on - and guests wipe away their tears.
@melissakayy93 Wedding day throw back! My son was 5 when my husband came in. Justin asked to surprise him with his at our wedding. #hedidnthavetobe #bradpaisley #fatherson #weddingday #blendedfamily #sevenyears @Dakota Traylor ♬ original sound - Melissakayy
The video was taken at their wedding 7 years ago, and naturally folks in the comments wanted an update - and father and son are clearly still doing well, recently hitting up a Michigan football game together:
@melissakayy93 Replying to @Kristina Dawn for those of you asking for an update 7 years later! Heres them a few weeks ago at the BIG HOUS. #michigan #bighouse #Wolverines @Dakota Traylor ♬ Michigan Wolverines - Avery Andon
You love to see it. Shoutout to this dad, and all the men out there who step up and become fathers when they "didn't have to be."

I was 16 pregnant and married to what turned out to be the worst mistake of my life! My son was the only shining star from that! I got us out, divorced and didn’t even take my son on the few dates I went on! Then I met my future and he and my son fell in love as quickly as we had! 3 months later he legally adopted him and we settled in having 2 more kids! We lost him 6 years ago and this was one of the songs our son picked for the memorial service! There are good men and women who will love you and your children!❣️
