Is there anything Jamey Johnson can't make incredible? Don't get me wrong, Chris Stapleton is one of one in the country music world, but there's just something about the way Jamey Johnson can command the entire room the second he plucks a note on that Martin acoustic guitar. And then when he starts to sing, he brings the room to its knees. It's damn near magical. Jamey Johnson was on hand to honor Chris Stapleton at the 17th Annual ACM Honors last month (it finally aired tonight), and as one would expect, delivered an incredibly captivating performance. Singing "Whiskey & You," a cut from Stapleton's 2015 breakout solo album Traveller, the song was actually originally recorded by Tim McGraw in 2007 for his
Let It Go record. It was also cut by Aaron Lewis, Jason Eady, and more. Written by Chris Stapleton, along with Lee Thomas Miller, the song tells the heartbreaking story of a man whose love affair with the bottle has cost him the love of a woman who has left him. Of the song, Chris says the genesis was pretty simple: "This was a title brought into a writing session by my dear friend Lee Miller. The title wrote the song in my opinion. It was an album cut on a Tim McGraw record. I always thought it was one of the better songs I had been a part of so I decided to play it out. Over time it became a song that I was rarely allowed to leave the stage without singing. We went through several versions of recording this song until I finally decided it was best to present it in its original form: me, a guitar and one microphone."
And that's exactly how Jamey presented it... a guitar, a microphone, and that big baritone voice. Country music perfection. Chris was honored with the 59th ACM Artist-Songwriter of the Year Award. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfpXylp2Y74
