This will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Last night, the ACM Honors was filled with stellar performances that honored the icons who have helped shape and define the country music industry. From Eric Church tipping his hat to Alan Jackson through an eye-opening performance of "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow" to Jamey Johnson's stellar performance of Chris Stapleton's "Whiskey & You," it was a night full of note-worthy music. However, one performance that we need to chat about is Vince Gill and Ashley McBryde 's duet. Tony Brown, a seven-time ACM-winning producer, was chosen as this year's recipient of the ACM Icon Award. Tony Brown has a long history in country music, from sitting in Emmylou Harris' band to his production work with Reba, Vince Gill,
and George Strait . He is known for having his hand in the making of hits. The first song that Brown ever produced for Vince Gill was his 1990 hit "When I Call Your Name." So, it was only fitting that the ACM Award-winning producer be honored with the hit song being sung by Gill and a fellow ACM Award-winning artist, Ashley McBryde. On the original studio cut of "When I Call Your Name," Patty Loveless is the featured female harmony, so McBryde had big shoes to fill. But given that she is a powerhouse among female artists today, she gracefully stepped up to the challenge and knocked it out of the park. The performance of the melancholy song brings goosebumps to listeners as Gill and McBryde's voices pair so well together. "A note on the table that told me goodbye It said you'd grown weary of living a lie
Oh, your love has ended, but mine still remains But nobody answers when I call your name..." After the third verse, before the artists have a break during the bridge, Gill says into the mic: "Good job, Ash." Sending the crowd into loud applause. A grin crosses McBryde's face as she graciously takes the praise from the country music legend. This is a beautiful performance that not only highlights one of the incredible songs in Vince Gill's catalog but also pays tribute to the long-standing relationship he has with Tony Brown. Even the best producers have to have the talent of an artist to make it a hit, and this was a match made in heaven. I'd be lying if I said this didn't choke me up a little. Fire it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V9BUYg2A-k
