Big Black Bear Makes Itself Right At Home In Crawlspace Of California Couple’s Home

What would you do if a 400-pound bear decided to make itself comfortable underneath your home? Not everyone would be as friendly, understanding and hospitable as the Neslers are being with their furry outdoor friend. The older California couple is making headlines for how calm and cool they are about a large black bear living in the crawlspace of their house. The Sierre Madre homeowners say that their crawlspace is only about five feet tall in its tallest portion, so there's not a ton of room down there for an animal the size of a black bear. However, the bear seems to find the space very cozy, and Susan and Bob Nesler assume that it likes the heat that comes through their floors. When California Fish and Wildlife found out about the bear living under the home, they set cameras up outside the crawlspace opening in order to keep an eye on the bear. They are still trying to figure out how to capture the bear and relocated it, though they aren't necessarily in a rush. Susan told NBC News that their outdoor visitor hasn't done anything that would make them rush his removal:
"He comes in around 5 or 5:30 in the morning and leaves late at night. He hasn't caused any problem for us. Other than we need to get him to leave for safety sake." And when Susan says safety, she means both for themselves and the bear they've nicknamed "Junior." Bob and Susan have made it clear that they don't want the black bear to be forced out of his temporary living space through means such as tranquilizing or pepper bombs. The Nesslers want the bear to be trapped humanely, and that's obviously easier said than done. For now, the relationship between the bear and the Nesslers is one of tolerance. "Junior" doesn't bother them, and the Nesslers don't bother the bear - they just make sure to remember that an apex predator is living under their home. And fortunately (or I guess unfortunately), "Junior" leaves behind plenty of reminders in the Nessler's yard:
"He does leave piles of scat. So that's about my biggest complaint." You can see videos and pictures of the bear that's living rent free in the video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPbnbOAxt4k
