Break out that Grim Reaper costume because we just witnessed a murder. It's that time of year again, when that abandoned Kmart in your community comes back to life as a Spirit Halloween for the month of October before sitting vacant again for the next 10 months. Spirit Halloween has a pretty incredible business model to be honest, moving into large vacant buildings for what I can only assume is pretty cheap rent during the spooky season to sell their Halloween costumes and decorations. It's pretty funny to watch the pop up in any empty store they can find, make a ton of money in a month, and then just disappear until next year. Their store and their business model is so famous at this point that they've become a meme any time a store goes out of business: Just turn it into a Spirit Halloween. So it was kind of low hanging fruit for Saturday Night Live to feature a sketch making fun of the Halloween store during their 50th season premiere this past weekend. The fake commercial/PSA for Spirit Halloween pokes fun at the store for "helping our struggling communities by setting up shop in every vacant building in the country," moving into "a condemned AutoZone where a murder happened" to provide vulnerable communities with "wigs that give you a rash." SNL also took a shot at the store's employees, saying that Spirit Halloween is providing jobs for "some of America's hardest hit perverts" and calling their costumes "junk." So it's not really a surprise that Spirit Halloween wasn't exactly thrilled by the parody. The store decided to respond to the show on Twitter with one of their famous costumes created specially for SNL - or as they called it, "Irrelevant 50-Year-Old TV Show." The costume, in that famous Spirit Halloween package, includes "dated references, unknown cast members, and shrinking ratings," which honestly sounds pretty accurate. https://twitter.com/SpiritHalloween/status/1840852265663406281 As much as I respected Spirit Halloween before, I like them even more now after their shot at SNL.
