Honestly, what couldn't Randy Travis do? A few months ago we were all surprised to learn that Randy Travis was releasing a new song despite not having much control over his voice or body due to a 2013 stroke. It turned out that AI was heavily utilized (obviously) to create the project which lead to a firestorm of opinions on the future of music given this new reality where an artist doesn't actually have to sing a song to have their voice be part of it. But that shouldn't overshadow who Randy Travis was at his peak. With one of the most iconic baritone voices in genre history, Travis was a superstar in the '80s, '90s, and early aughts. Songs like "Three Wooden Crosses", "Forever and Ever, Amen", and "On the Other Hand" are key pieces of country history he racked up a total of 16 number ones and 30 Top 10's in his multi-decade career. That changed in 2013 when he suffered his stroke but even through today he's doing his best to be a part of the music scene, meeting with
Post Malone after his debut country album release, playing a show with his original band at the Ryman, and doing his best to support the new wave of stars like Lainey Wilson . But I just stumbled upon a video from back in the day that shows Randy excelling at a skill outside of music. Whether you call it gunspinning, gun artistry, gunplay, or gun twirling, Randy was pretty good at tossing, holstering, drawing, and putting some flair on a revolver. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6OwDFzNoIJ0 Let's hope he was smart and had it unloaded but not too shabby at all. Turns out, quick drawing and gunspinning were something Randy really enjoyed and spoke about it with Ralph Emery back in 1990. Honestly the entire 7 minute clip is well worth your time to watch, it really shows that Randy had some lowkey comedic chops and was pretty dang skilled at quick drawing. Here's to the great Randy Travis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZEpV52sc88&t=14s
