Laying one down a love song for his wife. Marcus King knows how to shred, and that's not a secret, but hearing it dial it back for a tender love song is an out-of-body experience. The South Carolina native is currently on his Mood Swings World Tour, celebrating the songs off his latest Rick Rubin-produced album, Mood Swings . King usually keeps his setlists to his discography, throwing in one or two covers from the greats like Merle Haggard and Danny O'Keefe. The covers he throws in are usually ones on which he can put his soulful spin on, so when Tyler Childers' "Shake The Frost" started making it into the rotation over the past couple weeks, I was elated. During his set, King lets his band take a break, and he performs a few acoustic numbers. In Texas last night, King told the audience that when he is in the thick of his tour and starts to miss his loved ones at home, especially his wife, he likes to sing this song because it reminds him why he does it all. It serves as a grounding song. But "Shake The Frost" must also have some special meaning within his marriage because last night, he noted he wanted to sing it for his bride, Briley, who was at the show. Oh, to have a love where you get serenaded in front of a massive crowd...sigh. Over the years, there have been many stellar covers of "Shake The Frost," but this one from King just moved to the top of my list. He keeps the composition simple and belts out the lyrics, driving home each word that leaves his lips. The performance leaves one with chills. We at Whiskey Riff give this cover a fat stamp of approval.
If you want to hear the whole song, fire up this video from earlier in the tour when he performed it in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: https://youtu.be/v5DpIMY4kUc?si=ihnczLHIbzW-XiAI&t=243 </div>
