The official southern girl anthem, courtesy of Megan Moroney . Today, the country star released a deluxe edition of her sophomore studio album Am I Okay? , called Am I Okay? (I'll Be Fine), which features three new songs in "Break It Right Back," "I'll Be Fine," and the one I want to focus on today, "Bless Your Heart." It's one she's teased a couple times before during live performances, and I knew from the first time I heard it that it was a big hit. I'm happy to report back that I was right... Quickly, if you're not from the South, you might be unfamiliar with the phrase "bless your heart," or at the very least, don't know just how many different ways it can be used. I don't want to reveal too many of our secrets and take away the sanctity of the phrase, but let's just say, it isn't
always a nice thing if someone says that to you. But on the flip side, "bless your heart" can be used very sincerely and genuinely to show sympathy for someone. That's the magic of the phrase, but I've already said too much... Written by Meg along with Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jessi Jo Dillon, the lyrics are hilariously cutting and sassy, where she runs through a list of insults, seemingly coming from another woman, that she's clearly heard a time or two that are meant to bring her down. What the other person doesn't realize, though, is that Meg actually pities them for how mean they are and isn't bothered by what they think: "You’re trying to wreck my name and you keep running down my friends You should read re-direct attention to those roots and those split ends
I think I’ll smile and win some grace, no chance you’ll say it to my face Go hate somebody else, I’m kinda busy if you can’t tell (playing shows, being pretty) Bless your heart, must be hard being as mean as you are Shooting daggers, throwing stones from a self-appointed throne I’m good with words, could make you hurt but I won’t twist the knife I’m just glad I’m everything you aren’t, bless your heart" Inject it into my veins... It's passive aggressive and a little underhanded, but still sweet on the surface and perfectly petty, which is open of the South's best recipes. This song captures so much of what it's like to be a girl, who has to mind your southern manners and be a lady, while also telling someone to f*** off. "Bless Your Heart" definitely reminiscent of early Kacey Musgraves or Miranda Lambert in terms of the writing and subject matter and has shades of Meg's fan-favorite song "I'm Not Pretty," and I can't get enough, because that's another one of my favorites. I'm going to have it on repeat for the foreseeable future... check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjWUVcnagFA
