Hurricane Milton is entering uncharted territory. As North Carolina, East Tennessee, Georgia, and other parts of Southern Appalachia heal from Hurricane Helene, another giant storm is about to hit land in Florida. Hurricane Milton is forecasted to hit land Wednesday night (tonight) and is currently predicted to be one of the most destructive storms on record. Over the last 24 hours, Milton grew from a Category 4 hurricane to a Category 5, making it more powerful than Katrina. With its winds having moved from 80 miles an hour to over 140 miles per hour, Florida officials are urging people to get out before it is too late. Florida interstates have been in gridlock as the final surge of people are trying to escape as the predecessor rain event moves in. (PREs are the storms that occur up to 36 hours before the main surge of a hurricane hits land.) https://twitter.com/XtraBuck/status/1843995955793920402 Yesterday, as a local Miami news station reported on the storm and informed viewers of the horrific effects it's expected to inflict on land, the station's meteorologist got very emotional. The clip was worrisome as even the professionals see how devastating this storm will be. MSNBC reported the following:
"You might have seen this today, an emotional report from the NBC Miami meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales. He was being interviewed live today when the news that the storm had grown explosively into a Category 5." Their broadcast then cuts to the clip from NBC Miami, showing the weather expert choking up as he talks about the storm. "Yes, that news just came out right now. And it certainly, it's just an incredible, incredible, incredible hurricane. It has dropped... (begins to choke up) It has dropped 50 millibars in the last 10 hours. I apologize. This is just horrific. The maximum sustained wins are 160 miles per hour. And it is just gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico, where you can imagine the seas are so incredibly hot. Record hot as you can imagine..."
He goes on to explain how the environment has impacted the storm's ability to grow to this strength. The emotion that this meteorologist is displaying should be a sure sign that it's time to get out. Two horrific hurricanes back to back...our thoughts are with everyone affected by Hurricane Helene and those getting ready to brave Milton.
@msnbc A Florida meteorologist with decades of experience became emotional while reporting on Hurricane Milton, a monstrous storm expected to make landfall in his state this week. “I apologize. This is just horrific,” John Morales, a meteorologist for Miami’s local NBC affiliate, NBC 6 South Florida, warned viewers. @The Rachel Maddow Show explains. #hurricanemilton #florida #weather ♬ original sound - MSNBC
Many folks in the comments appreciated this authenticity, showing this emotion on-air, as even professionals can be scared about what is coming their way.
"We need people like him. he cares. He really cares. It's appreciated that there are people like you who are still out there." "This is a person who cares for others, has compassion and empathy." "That's scary. I am praying for folks and pets in Florida. May you all be safe." "This is a guy who probably knows more than he's able to share." "That broke my heart to watch." "Been watching Morales in Florida since the '80s as a kid. Never seen him like this." Since reading it, this comment has been with me. You know he has seen many hurricanes throughout his career, and a reaction like this shows how horrific this is expected to be. "62-year-old born and raised in Tampa. Never left for a hurricane, but my wife and I decided we needed to for this one. God bless everyone."
"I can feel his desperation and distress and it breaks my heart."
