I wish he would've released this version, honestly. Today, Post Malone put out individual videos of all the songs he did during a special live performance in the studio that was streamed on YouTube a couple moths ago, mostly from his recent debut country album F-1 Trillion and the extended edition, F-1 Trillion: Long Bed . They were are all exceptionally well done, and none of the featured artists joined him, just his live band that’s been on tour with him this year... which I actually really enjoyed, to be honest. It's nothing against them, they're some of my favorite country artists too, but hearing Posty and his live band raw and uncut is just so special. And surprisingly, one of the standouts was his performance of "I Had Some Help," which was of course the lead single to the aforementioned
F-1 Trillion and originally featured Morgan Wallen. It was a mega crossover hit, peaking at #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart for multiple weeks, as well as the country charts. But for this studio performance, Post majorly switched up the production, playing the acoustic guitar alongside some piano and steel, and it gives the song an entirely new feel and meaning in comparison to the much more upbeat original. The more somber, slow instrumentation makes it feel like a sad, breakup ballad, which I think fits the lyrics so much better. Plus, I've always loved Posty's voice and this shows it off so well. You can tell he misses a few words in the beginning, which is understandable because he played a lot of songs that night, but he seems frustrated at the end, saying:
"See that's not pre-recorded, 'cuz I f****d up the f*****n' words!" Even with that small slip-up, I was so impressed with what he did here, and would absolutely love to get a real deal studio cut of it too. The version with Morgan is obviously fun, and resonated with tons of fans, but the sadness here is much more palpable and fitting. Do yourself a favor and check it out... if you weren't as much of a fan of the original, country radio-friendly version, I think you might really love this: https://youtu.be/7mM_3Wu4uhg?t=1 "I Had Some Help" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QIZE708gJ4
