Jelly Roll won't ever stop being a light for those in dark times. That's because he was once in a lot of struggling people's shoes, and now that he's not, he's trying to help and give back through the power of music. It's arguably never been more evident that it was in his newest album, Beautifully Broken , which focused in a lot on the power of prioritizing mental health. But even before his latest project, the Nashville native has tried to craft anthems to help those in need. One of his most famous and powerful is "Save Me," which was featured on his 2020 album Self Medicated. While he was a guest on The Jay Shetty Podcast , that song came up. Specially the fact that "Save Me" is one of the most played songs at addiction recovery centers. The rapper-turned-country-artist was humbled by the statistic, and immediately went into talking about how impactful it is to visit health centers like that:
"Unbelievable man. One of the coolest experiences of my life is being able to... especially catch people in those first 30 days. Or those first 10 or 15 days. Anytime we get to go back to a detox center and love on people, and play songs for them (is great)." Jelly Roll has become famous for visiting places where people are less fortunate and gifting them with some live music. He's previously talked about how when he was in those places - in low points in his life - he would have loved for someone to come visit and give him hope. So that what he now does for others. He went on to talk about that, as well as how much the success of "Save Me" has meant to him: "We go to prisons all the time and play and we go to homeless shelters, but you catch somebody during those first 10 days, cause I know what those 10 days are. To know that's the song that's getting people through that particular stretch...
It's like when they told me 'Save Me' is becoming the new 'Free Bird' of the south for funeral homes. They say they get more requests for 'Save Me' now, and that used to really bum me out and make me sad. But then I started thinking about how much that's helping people grieve." What's the inspiration for Jelly Roll to craft songs that can help people through tough times? He himself leaned on music to lift him up during low periods of his life, and gave Toby Keith's "Cryin' For Me" as an example: "How many song have helped me grieve, you know what I mean? Toby Keith's 'I'm gonna miss that smile, I'm gonna miss you my friend.' It got me through the death of my father. I listened to that song everyday. So I know how music can do that." You can hear Jelly Roll talk more about "Save Me," as well as his journey of self-forgiveness, in the interview below: https://youtu.be/I8Uw-kfp3ZE?si=2MavWkbxhaQ5RKYW&t=3316
