We can learn a lot from our elders. Especially someone like Reynolds Tomter, who is a 107-year-old veteran from Wisconsin. Reynolds served as a Merchant Marine in World War II, grew up during the Great Depression, and now holds the title of oldest man in Wisconsin. Oh, and he's still driving at the ripe age of a century and seven years. Tomter sat down with a podcaster named Jack Taylor to talk about his life, how he stays positive, how he's not afraid of passing away, and his advice on how to gracefully get older. It's truly a jam-packed interview, and one that we would all be a little bit better off listening to. At one point, the 107-year-old veteran was asked about what age he'd go back to if he could choose, and he said it would have been when he was able to vote for the first time. Tomter went on to explain that politics used to be a lot less divisive, and in his day, the two parties were separate, yet they worked together. And pointed out that's not how things work in 2024:
"We had this two party system and they agreed on things. They don't seem to want to get along on anything (anymore). They're all concerned about their own party." Taylor took that answer in, then asked the man sitting across from him who's really seen it all if his advice to the younger generation would be as follows: "That would be advice from your generation - the greatest generation - to our generation. When we're voting, when we're coming together to get something done, work together?" Tomter, steadily holding his coffee cup, said that Taylor hit the nail right on the head with his summarization of his thoughts on politics: "Yes. Yes to all of that. Again, I'll say that's my own opinion."
Hey, that's an opinion from 107-year-old veteran. It means a little bit more than just your average, run-of-the-mill opinion. Later on in the interview, Reynolds Tomter was asked what his "10 year plan" was, and he chuckled before he gave one of the most wholesome answers you'll ever hear: "Well, to keep going the way I am going. Keeping my health good enough so that I can be with all my friends. I enjoy life because I'm a people person. I've been that way all my life." God bless Reynolds Tomter.
