Throwback To When ‘Key & Peele’ Hilariously Pointed Out That Darius Rucker Is NOT, In Fact, “Hootie”

All these other TV shows keep getting back together to do more episodes, so why can't Key & Peele do the same? The sketch comedy show spanned five seasons and had an incredible run from 2012 to 2015. Who could ever forget their "Substitute Teacher" sketch, or their "East vs. West Bowl" football skit? There's just so much good content that they put out in what was really such a short amount of time. One of the ideas that might have gotten lost in the multitude of other high-level comedy bits was when they poked fun at Darius Rucker and Hootie and the Blowfish. They thought it was funny that Rucker insisted that he wasn't "Hootie" from Hootie and the Blowfish, and so they ran with it. The name actually came from a few college buddies, one who was nicknamed "Hootie" because of his big round glasses, and the other was named "Blowfish," because of his big cheeks. So one day when they came walking up together, Rucker said "It's Hootie & the Blowfish," and the rest is history. Of course, when Darius hit the solo country music scene with his debut album in 2008, people referred to him as Hootie. Even in the 1996 movie
Jerry Maguire, there is a scene where a kid mistakes Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character for Darius, calling him "Hootie." In an interview from 2013, Darius Rucker insisted that he wasn't Hootie, and that he never thought that people would think he was Hootie when they named the band: "When I named the band, I guess I didn't think that people would think I was Hootie. I don't know why I didn't think that, but I didn't think that at all. There was a time when the record really took off and people were calling me Hootie, I realized, 'Why didn't I name the band The Darius Rucker Band?' It was a thing. But then when I looked at it, I wouldn't have changed the name for anything. Because like it or hate it, you never forgot it. The name Hootie and the Blowfish, you never forgot it."
So basically, Key & Peele took the premise of that quote and made a sketch out of it. Sure, it was niche, but it ended up being so damn funny. As always, Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key wrote up a hilarious skit about Rucker trying to play a solo gig, and then executed it to perfection.
