Cody Jinks On His Anti-Music Industry Red Rocks Rant: “What You See Is A Hard-Headed, Do-It-Yourself Punk”

There's a lot of good choices out there but the latest Whiskey Riff Raff episode with Cody Jinks just may be my favorite... Jinks sat down with Shelby and Quinn to talk his latest record , getting sober, being a dad, and being called a "modern day outlaw," along with his love for classic scary movies, but one of my favorite parts was when he spoke about his now iconic anti-Nashville/music industry rant while playing to a sold out Red Rocks crowd a few years ago. Before playing "Colorado", he said: "Guys like us that said "f-k you" to the music industry don't play places like this. But we are very sincerely grateful for all of you for coming out and hanging out with us tonight. Thank you so much."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhTh0coCT6Q&t=64s This came just a few years after a more direct attack on Music City during a concert in Peoria, Illinois. “Ain’t this s-t fun? See this is s-t you used to see back in the 70’s when all those motherf-kers were out there singing and playing together, playing and singing and recording each other’s songs. We’re bringing that back! We said ‘F-k Nashville, we’ll start our own goddamn club.’” Safe to say, Jinks hasn't held his tongue throughout his career... And the proof is in the pudding... Jinks DID start his own club and achieved more than most could possibly dream about, all while staying completely independent and doing it his own way. Quinn brought up the Red Rocks quote and asked what it was that made him anti-music industry, to which Jinks said:
"I still feel like that. I've sold Red Rocks out 4 times and I still feel like that every time... I probably will always feel like that. I guess I never fit in as much because I didn't want to fit in with anybody else. A lot of what you see is a hard headed, do it yourself punk, you know, DIY, and I mean, I'd be lying if I didn't say a lot of it is just to say "That's how y'all did it. Not that I don't think it's right, but I'm just not going to do it because you said I needed to do it that way. As hard headed as I've been I've stayed true. I've always stayed true to myself and to my family and my band and my road crew... There's a lot of people on the road with me in double digit years." He continued to talk about artists telling him they stayed independent because of him, the pride that comes with that, and the ability to look back on his career and sort of pat himself on the back at his point, all of which still hammers home the point that Cody Jinks is a one-of-one artist who probably deserves more credit than he gets for helping guide the genre as a whole into better waters. You can find the entire episode on
Apple , Spotify , and anywhere else you listen to podcasts, including the YouTube video below. Big thank you to Cody Jinks for stopping by and for not being afraid to say what so many people think about the stifling nature of the music industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOJCfCcNnnI
