It's more than a little messed up to cheer on when players suffer what look to be career-altering, season-ending injuries, but that's where Cleveland Browns fans are at with Deshaun Watson. The highly-paid, much-maligned quarterback went down in the second quarter with a non-contact injury, and the crowd at Huntington Bank Field wasn't exactly sad to see that happen. Upon further review, the replay showed what absolutely has to be a ruptured Achilles. Look away or don't watch if you're squeamish: https://twitter.com/jmthrivept/status/1848066487887777808 You could hear when the referee announced the ruling that Watson gave himself up before he fumbled the ball that fans were going nuts as Dorian Thompson-Robinson prepared to enter the game as Cleveland's new QB. https://twitter.com/roddystr/status/1848067063241183611 As the cart was brought out to haul Watson away from the field, Browns players were imploring the fans to put a stop to their rather grotesque behavior. https://twitter.com/BenAxelrod/status/1848066288452608484 Even some locals are drawing the line there. https://twitter.com/cftalk/status/1848066965782331464 https://twitter.com/thedawgspodcast/status/1848067336109990121 Watson was already heavily booed before kickoff for playing so poorly throughout the season, and really since he's landed in Cleveland. All the
sexual misconduct lawsuits levied against him have innately alienated him from a good chunk of the fan base to begin with. As somebody who can acknowledge how monstrous Watson's alleged behavior was — commissioner Roger Goodell has called his conduct "predatory" in the past — I nevertheless struggle to get on board with cheering for such a serious injury. Probably best to just leave it there. Browns fans have suffered for a long, long time and are all too familiar with historic levels of losing, but this isn't exactly the energy you want to put out into the universe in hopes of turning things around.
