In Mike Tomlin and Russell Wilson I trust. I'm a huge Steelers fan and was pretty much on board with Justin Fields starting the rest of the season until Russell Wilson seemingly turned back the clock with a vintage performance against the Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams lead Jets in primetime last night. Admittedly, Russ was slow and shaky out of the gate and Heinz Field Acrisure Stadium was quick to unleash a flurry of boos after three consecutive 3-and-outs following an opening drive field goal. In that moment, it appeared head coach Mike Tomlin had made a critical error in benching Justin Fields, who had played the best football of his career through the first 6 games of the season, in favor of a "washed up" Russell Wilson and the fans did not hold back. https://twitter.com/CowardlyDoggo/status/1848168688140308989 But as we know, Mr. Unlimited and the offense snapped out of it and strung together 31 unanswered points after the Jets took a 15-6 lead with 5:29 left in the second quarter, sending the Steelers to 5-2 (both losses only by a combined 6 points, I might add) and the Jets to 2-5. While it took two more drives for the Steelers to start moving the ball again, on the first 3-and-out following the opening field goal, Russell Wilson made a check at the line that (I believe) bought him some more time with the Yinzers to figure things out. On 3rd and 1, with 8:31 left in the first quarter, Russ didn't like what he was seeing from the defense and audibled out of the play call using one of the best codes imaginable:
"We're gonna go Coors Light. Go Coors Light" https://twitter.com/Benstonium/status/1848164076699910436 How great is that? Nothing like the crisp refreshing taste of a lager brewed as cold as the Rockies to get the boys going, though he probably should have used this one in Denver if we're being honest... Again, this was not the precise moment that the tides turned for Pittsburgh, but it certainly brought Russ into the good graces a ton of Steelers fans: https://twitter.com/wdiamond605/status/1848165346345418922 https://twitter.com/SmellsLikeAmber/status/1848215424829202837 https://twitter.com/snoffster3/status/1848162260998668481 https://twitter.com/TheCoachesDesk/status/1848162193931731341 I absolutely love everything about this. Plus, the play he called was perfect, getting Calvin Austin wide open for a first down. Unfortunately a drop prevented this from being a highlight, but most importantly it brought Russ into Steelers fans' good graces and showed that he's still got the mind and arm to make things happen on the field. Drops, as frustrating as they are, will happen but the hope for a quarterback who can completely control the game was pushed right into the hearts of Yinzers across this great nation and came to fruition a few drives later. Never in a million years did I think Russell Wilson would be my quarterback but man, right now, I am so happy he is. Now enjoy these ridiculous George Pickens catches. https://twitter.com/TrainIsland/status/1848171017081966892 https://twitter.com/TrainIsland/status/1848186667628220544
