    Today’s story is a brief follow-up to my last Peeking into the Past which was about the opening of Whispering Pines. This picture is a broader view than the one used in the last story. It is from 1955 and it shows the construction underway for the sewer line that was being built to the new Collins & Aikman plant nearby. According to the Aug. 2, 1955 Stanly News & Press, the truck, shown in the center, had been traveling southbound on Highway 52. The truck driver had swerved to avoid a stopped car and he smashed into the deep ditch just north of Whispering Pines. The truck, loaded with 33,000 pounds of feed, snapped a light pole and damaged a sign. It took two wreckers and a power company truck, that was used to erect light poles, to remove the wrecked truck from the ditch. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
