WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — The trial date for a White Sulphur Springs father who is charged in the September 2023 death of his two-month-old son has not yet been set,

Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney Pat Via confirmed on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Shane Dolin, 25, was arrested in January 2023 on a charge of child abuse resulting in death.

The baby died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va., on September 3, 2024.

Court documents showed that Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department arrested Dolin after executing a search warrant on the baby’s medical records at Roanoke Carillon and speaking with care providers and Child Protective Services workers.

Child death raises questions about mandated reporting

According to statements in the criminal complaint, the baby’s mother left for work around 9:30 a.m. and had been quieter than usual at work, according to statements made by Dolin’s supervisor.

The supervisor alleged the mother had not appeared overtly upset when she allegedly notified her supervisor shortly after arriving at work that she had to leave because she’d been informed in a phone call that her baby was not breathing, according to the criminal complaint, which was filed in Greenbrier County.

Greenbrier County emergency service workers initially told police they had responded to a report of a baby bleeding from his nose.

EMS workers said they did not see any signs of bruising on the baby when they responded to the call, according to court documents, but medical staff at the Roanoke hospital later told police it appeared the baby had been injured in a manner consistent with having been shaken.

Medical staff also told police that neither Dolin nor the baby’s mother stayed overnight with the baby after he was brought to the hospital, and police found that Dolin had allegedly placed the baby’s car seat for sale online shortly after his death, allegedly stating the infant seat was no longer needed.

The prosecutor said on Monday that there were no immediate plans to charge anyone else in the baby’s death.

Dolin’s parents were in the house just prior to the 911 call being placed, but Dolin was allegedly alone in the room with the baby when the baby became ill, according to the criminal complaint.

Dolin’s parents participated in getting medical help for their grandson, according to the criminal complaint.

“The state intends to proceed with the case that is currently pending, and there has been no final decision with respect to any other charges against any other individuals,” said Via, the prosecutor.

Via said Dolin waived his right to a speedy trial at a hearing in April, which is not uncommon.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for July 23, 2024, in Greenbrier County Circuit Court.

Dolin has pleaded “not guilty” in the baby’s death.

Dolin’s attorney, Mike Whitt, declined to comment on Monday.
