WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (WVDN) – Drew Phipps, a fish biologist at The National Fish Hatchery is inviting the public to attend an evening at the hatchery, discovering local insects and moths, as another great educational event. The local hatchery is a favorite place to be for children and adults and they offer many workshops, festivals, derbies and more for the public.

Paul Shaw, a local moth enthusiast will also be on hand to discuss how vital a part the insects and moths play in the environment as a whole. Any missing native link can, as you know, start ripple effects of a once healthy and thriving ecosystem, to chaotic and detrimental effects in our animal kingdom.

Several light stations will be set up to attract and observe nocturnal insects and moths, so that one can learn about and become involved with the protection of certain species and the annihilation of others that pose threats. The identification and discussion will be led by Paul Shaw.

The event comes just in time for the national celebration week of moths. The event will be held at the hatchery’s amphitheater on Wednesday, July 17 from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. No registration is necessary. Wear weather-appropriate clothing items. Personal use of bug deterrents is ok.
