Whitefish's Lion Mountain VFW Post 276 held its annual Memorial Day celebrations on Monday, May 27, 2024. The wreath dropping ceremony took place at the Veterans' Bridge and a touching service was held at the Whitefish Cemetery. The Whitefish boys placed third and the girls placed seventh at the MHSA State A Tennis Championships at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell on May 23-24.On the boys side, Whitefish’s double squad of Mason Kelch and Dane Hunt placed third. After over an hour of discussion, the Whitefish Community Development Board postponed its vote on a conditional use permit for a hangar on public land near the city airport. The board will revisit the item at its June 20 meeting.William McKinney and the Montana Department of Transportation are requesting a conditional use permit to expand the use of the Whitefish airport by building an airplane hangar on 1761 E. Carson Krack was more than busy at the Class A State Track and Field Championships; he was dominant. Whitefish finished third as a team behind Corvallis and Columbia Falls.The Whitefish girls, anchored by strong relays and the running of Brooke Zetooney, placed second as a team. Whitefish Community Foundation awards $120,000 grant for affordable housing
Whitefish Community Foundation recently awarded a $120,000 grant to the Northwest Montana Community Land Trust (NWMTCLT) for the acquisition of four affordable homes in Whitefish.NWMTCLT is a nonprofit organization with a mission of providing affordable homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income families in the Flathead Valley and Northwest Montana. Under the land trust model, the land underneath the home is separated from the value of the home. Flathead County closes fairgrounds grandstand due to safety concerns
Safety concerns have forced the closure of the main seating structures in the arena at the Flathead County Fairgrounds and pushed events to alternate venues for the time being.The county began a capital improvement campaign in February to design and build a new seating structure to replace the north bleachers adjacent to the larger covered main grandstand, along with new concessions and additional amenities.An inspection of the north bleachers found many areas with significant signs of rot and deterioration of the wood structure, framing and beams. The Whitefish Review literary journal is accepting submissions for its annual humor writing prize, which offers $1,000 to the winning piece. Fiction, non-fiction and poetry will be accepted through Sept. 30. In addition to the prize money, the winner’s work will be published in “Whitefish Review.” The entry fee is $25, a fundraiser for the nonprofit literary journal.TV writer Molly McNearney will serve as the final judge in the contest.“Comedy almost lost Molly to journalism, but Whitefish Review is thankful she knew we need more humor in the world than news,” said Brian Schott, founding editor of the nonprofit literary journal.
