Collaboration expands robotics education for area high school students

WEST MICHIGAN — MiSTEM Network Region 9 has announced a strategic partnership with UACJ Whitehall Industries to provide space for a new practice facility dedicated to local FIRST Robotics teams.

The business and school partnerships will support young minds through STEM education and hands-on robotics competitions beginning in the fall.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is an international high school robotics competition. Each year, teams of high school students, coaches, and mentors work for six weeks to build robots capable of competing in that year’s game that weighs up to 125 pounds.

The MiSTEM Network is organized into 16 regional hubs, and through the Network’s approach, local leaders in education and the business community are innovating pathways for students to experience STEM learning.

MiSTEM regional director Brian Dotson said the partnership will expand educational opportunities for students.

“We are incredibly grateful to UACJ Whitehall Industries for their support and commitment to the next generation of engineers and innovators,” Dotson said. “This partnership will provide our students with the resources and space they need to excel in the FIRST Robotics competitions, fostering creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills.”

UACJ Whitehall Industries, a leader in high-quality aluminum products, has generously offered space within their facility to serve as a practice area for our robotics teams.

The new venue will allow our students to design, build, and test their robots in a safe and spacious environment, preparing them for upcoming competitions.

The partnership with UACJ Whitehall Industries is also seeking additional funding to purchase essential supplies needed for the practice facility.

Supplies needed include carpet which is necessary for the practice field surface to mimic competition conditions, supplies for a perimeter which is essential for setting up a safe and accurate practice field boundary and field elements with critical components that simulate real competition challenges and scenarios.

Vice president of extrusion at UACJ Mike Wegener said supporting hands-on education for students will help support the robotics industry as a whole.

“Investing in our robotics program is an investment in the future,” Wegener said.

Community members, businesses, and supporters of STEM education are invited to get involved. Contributions of any size will go toward these vital supplies. Financial contributions can be made directly through the West Shore Education Service District (West Shore ESD).

Vice president of operations at UACJ Mike Eby said he is excited to be a part of bolstering robotics in Michigan.

“By supporting our local teams, you’re shaping the next generation of skilled professionals who will drive innovation and progress in various fields,” Eby said.
