Fatal 2020 Sterling apartment fire case in court this week
MORRISON, Ill. — The trial of a Rock Falls man charged with murder and arson is ongoing this week in Whiteside County. Steven Coleman is accused of setting the fatal fire on June 1, 2020, in the overnight hours at the Western Apartment Complex in Sterling. A 49-year-old woman and two girls, aged 8 and 13 died in the fire. A 35-year-old woman and 12-year-old were rescued and taken to the hospital. A Dixon firefighter and paramedic was also injured in the fire after falling through the floor.

ROCK FALLS - A trial is underway in Whiteside County for a Rock Falls man accused of setting a deadly 2020 fire in Sterling. Steven Coleman faces a number of charges, including aggravated arson and murder. The blaze happened in June 2020 at Western Apartments on West 3rd Street. Carrie Hose, 8-year-old Shayla Walker and 13-year-old Celina Serrano all died in the fire.

Weather in northern Illinois on Monday will include extreme heat, thunderstorms, high winds, and possibly large hail and tornadoes according to the National Weather Service. A heat advisory is in effect for Bureau, DeKalb, Grundy, Kendall, La Salle, Lee, Ogle, Whiteside and Will counties from 8 a.m. Monday through 7 p.m. Monday. Heat index values are expected to go as high as 105 to 110 degrees. The National Weather Service reminds residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
