Whiteside County deputy arrests man who allegedly pulled a gun out during confrontation
LYNDON, Ill. — A Lyndon man was arrested after allegedly drawing a firearm during a meeting with a sheriff's deputy. According to the Whiteside County Sheriff's Office, officers conducted a field ID on a suspicious person on the 400 block of 2nd Ave. E in Lyndon shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. While the deputy was speaking with the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Ryan Poulter, officers claim Poulter pulled out a firearm from his waistband. The deputy then restrained Poulter, and he was taken into custody without injury.
Deputies Respond to Two-Vehicle Injury Crash
On Monday, July 8, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office Telecommunications received a 911 call, reporting a two-vehicle crash on Freeport Road, at the intersection of Penrose Road, rural Sterling, IL. Initial investigation, by responding Deputies and the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, determined 59-year-old Laura Jenkins-Reffett of Altona, IL, was traveling northbound on Freeport Road and attempted to turn west onto Penrose Road. There, a southbound motorcycle, driven by 27-year-old Tanner Rennie of Morrison, IL, collided with the vehicle driven by Jenkins-Reffett. Rennie was transported from the scene via OSF LifeFlight with serious injuries. Jenkins-Reffett was issued a Citation for Failure to Yield while Turning Left. The crash remains under investigation.
Sheriff: Sterling man rescues son from vehicle as it sinks in Rock River
MORRISON — A Sterling man jumped into the Rock River and saved his 3-year-old son from a quickly sinking vehicle that had rolled into the river on Friday night. Deputies were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. Friday to the boat launch in the 22000 block of Moline Road in rural Sterling, according to a news release from the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office issued Sunday morning. Initial information provided to Whiteside County dispatchers was that a vehicle had gone into the river with a child inside.
Deputies Respond to Child and Vehicle in Rock River
On Friday, July 5, 2024, at approximately 7:27 p.m., Whiteside County Deputies were dispatched to the boat launch in the 22000 block of Moline Road, in rural Sterling, IL. Initial information provided to Whiteside County Dispatchers was that a vehicle had gone into the river with a child inside. Deputies arrived on scene to find a male, identified as John Cavazos of Sterling, and his three-year-old son on the bank of the river. Cavazos told Deputies he and his family had been fishing, and his vehicle was parked near the boat launch. They started packing the vehicle to leave when, for unknown reasons, it came out of park[ing gear] and rolled into the river, with the three-year-old inside. As the vehicle sank, other bystanders at the boat launch called 911.

It's not too late to sign up for Workplace Wednesday offered by the Regional Office of Education #47. Sessions will be held July 10, 17 and 24 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Workplace Wednesday gives teachers the opportunity to visit businesses in different Career Pathways throughout the three counties area. By visiting places of employment, it helps educators develop real world lessons for their classrooms and prepare students for their future in the workforce. Calendar: 4-H Federation hosts pork chop dinner
MORRISON, Ill. — The Whiteside 4-H Federation Pork Chop Dinner will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 12 at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds, 201 W. Winfield St., Morrison. Meals can be enjoyed on-site or drive up and take them home. Each $10 meal comes with a pork chop sandwich, baked beans, apple sauce, chips, cookie and water.
