Deadly Derecho Carves 500-Mile Path Of Destruction Across Midwest
A deadly derecho swept across the Midwest on Monday (July 15), leaving a path of destruction nearly 500 miles long from Iowa to Indiana. The storm brought hurricane-force winds and tornadoes, uprooting trees, snapping utility poles, and ripping roofs from buildings. The Chicago area was particularly hard hit, with hundreds of thousands of residents left without power.
Woman arrested after leaving son in SUV
SANBORN—A 28-year-old Melvin woman was arrested about 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11, on charges of reckless driving and child endangerment. The arrest of Felicia Renee Morales stemmed from an incident that day on Highway 18 near Starling Avenue, about three miles east of Sanborn, according to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.
Hawarden Man Airlifted After Monday Crash
Rock Valley, Iowa – A Hawarden man was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital following a single-vehicle crash about 8 miles south of Rock Valley Monday afternoon (July 15th). According to the Iowa State Patrol, the mishap occurred about 1:45 Monday afternoon at the corner of Eagle Avenue and 390th Street. Troopers say 76-year-old Charles McMillan of Hawarden was westbound on 390th Street in a 2013 Ford pickup, when he crossed the center line and entered the south ditch, striking a field drive.
