Volunteers Extinguish Field Fire West Of Colfax
Volunteer Firefighters in Central Whitman County extinguished a field fire along State Route 26 West of Colfax Monday morning. The fire burned in Whitman County Fire District 13 out of Onecho. Volunteers from District 6 out of Endicott, D8 from LaCrosse and D11 out of Colfax helped battle the blaze. The fire burned about 40 acres of standing wheat on Penewawa Road. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Public Meeting Tuesday Regarding Development Of Whitman County Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Whitman County officials will host a public meeting Tuesday about the effort to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The document helps communities prepare, respond and recover from wildfires. The plan will also make Whitman County eligible for millions of dollars from the federal government for wildfire protection and response. Tuesday’s meeting is from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Public Service Building on Main Street in Colfax. The plan will be opened for public comment early next year.

MOSCOW - The Moscow teenager accused of starting the fire that destroyed a bridge on the popular trail between Pullman and Moscow has been found innocent. The 14-year-old was charged with arson in Whitman County Juvenile Court. The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office believed that the boy started the wildfire last August that spread to a bridge on the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail. The case recently concluded with a juvenile court bench trial called a “fact-finding hearing.” Commissioner Doug Robinson found that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Jacob Spray, 36, waived the right to a speedy trial in Whitman County Superior Court on Friday morning. Former Social Worker in Colfax Sent to Prison in Sextortion Case
COLFAX - A former social worker in Colfax has been sent to prison for extorting a woman for sex in exchange for helping get her children back. Robert Tarver was found guilty in April during his bench trial in Whitman County Superior Court. Judge George fearing convicted Tarver of felony receiving unlawful compensation with sexual motivation and perjury. He was found not guilty of felony extortion.
