WHITMIRE, S.C. — Whitmire varsity softball team continues to make history. The Wolverines(17-8,10-1 region 2-A) wins the district championship after defeating Williston-Elko(9-8, 4-3 region 4-A) by the score of 21-3.

The Wolverines district title was delayed not denied, and the delay was due to lightning in the area. After the nearly long hour delay, the home team went right to work following the game’s first pitch.

Whitmire retired the Lady Blue Devils first three batters and proceeded to put up 10 runs at the bottom of the first inning. The visitors tried to put up a fight in the second inning by adding three runs of their own to the scoreboard, but it wasn’t enough.

“We came out in held them scoreless in the first inning and then we put up 10 in the first so it doesn’t phase them. They were playing charades and were loose. They came out ready to play ball when it was time and that’s just what they did. It was 16-3 or something like that after two innings,” said Wolverines’ head coach Andrew Campbell.

The home team quickly responded by adding eight more runs to their total score at the bottom of the second inning and led 18-3 going into the third inning. The lady Blue Devils was held scoreless the remainder of the game and they were sent into the off-season after only just five innings of play in the district title game.

Whitmire added three more runs for insurance in the bottom of the third inning and got a chance to let some of their back-ups get a taste of the action. It was a complete team effort in the win and the Lady Wolverines continued their historic playoff run. They now have won their first region title and district title with the next stop possibly being a state title.

“I told the girls before the game just stay loose and do what we’ve been doing all year and that’s evident. I’ve never seen a team win a district championship and are just like, ‘hey let’s go shake hands,’” said Campbell. “But that is them. They are just loose like this all the time. Before the game during the lightning delay, they are just up top playing charades. That’s what I told them and they did.”

Whitmire had a quick turn around and hosted McBee in the Upper State Semifinals on Friday, May 10. They lost 8-3 and will now have to travel to Dixie on Monday, May 13 for a do or die game to avoid being eliminated.
