J.P. McCarthy was born in New York City in March 1933. He went into the army when he was 20 years old and it was during his stint that he became interested in radio broadcasting. After his discharge, he moved to Michigan, where he settled in Flint. He acquired a job at WTAC (“Wee-tac”) but that wasn't enough. He would travel down to Detroit and look for work at WJR, where he was finally given an audition. He was hired as an announcer in 1956.

Man dies after disappearing underwater on Lake Lancer in Gladwin Co.
GLADWIN COUNTY — On Saturday, July 27, Gladwin County Central Dispatch got a call about a possible drowning on Lake Lancer in Sugar Springs. Deputies, Butman Township Fire and Gladwin EMS responded. Deputies said Jose Galicia from downstate was swimming near his friend’s boat when he disappeared below the surface. His friends and neighbors located him at the bottom of the lake, about 7 feet down. Galicia was pulled out and CPR was started. Fire and EMS took over, but they were not able to revive him. An autopsy has been ordered, but deputies said the evidence seems consistent with an accidental drowning.
Midland receives $40M to reduce flooding risks
