VINA, Ala (WHNT) — The Franklin County Superintendent says crews are assessing the damage at Vina High School after a line of storms Thursday night caused damage at the school.

Superintendent Greg Hamilton said Thursday the school will not open for students Friday morning after storms moved through Franklin County Thursday night and damaged the school. He said the damage appears to have been caused by strong winds and mainly affected the school’s roof.

Hundreds expected in downtown Huntsville for busy weekend

“Much of the damage appears to be roof-related, but there is no way to assess everything tonight,” Hamilton said. “With the boards and nails and metal all over campus, it has created an unsafe environment for students.”

The superintendent said he began assessing the damage Friday at 7 a.m. He said Franklin County Schools maintenance and transportation staff were also on-site to help with cleanup and repairs to the school.

Hamilton said Mid America Roofing was on campus to assess the damage to the buildings damaged by debris and an insurance adjuster was on site after the school system filed a claim.

The superintendent thanked administration, maintenance, transportation and staff for their work towards getting to school reopened.
