COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — On Monday, the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office held an active shooter training at Colbert Heights High School.

The training was to prepare for keeping students safe this year before they head back to school – and to practice with the school’s new $2 million safety platform, called Nside.

Vice President of Business with Nside, Sarah Ann McCain, says the platform is the most up-to-date safety feature for schools.

“They can access each of their camera feeds through the platform, they can access that emergency operations plan, it’ll tell them exactly where people need to be how to respond in those moments, we also have 360-degree images installed inside and outside in every classroom and closet,” McCain said.

Sheriff Eric Balentine told News 19 that each student resource officer on campus also learned what they should do in certain situations while waiting for backup…and this year, officers will be on the lookout.

“Going into this school year, every school has an SRO, every school has someone on hand,” Balentine said.

There were two scenarios the sheriff’s office went through a hostage situation where it ended with no injuries and then a full active shooter training..

“We did have causalities and injured students, we learned to neutralize the threat, the shooter was deceased, we had medical come in and do a triage we have as reunification point setup,  so parents know when we do have a situation like this, it’s important to not they do not come to the scene,” Balentine said.

This will be the very first year that Colbert County has this new safety feature. Colbert County Schools students will head back to the classroom on Wednesday, August 7th.
