NASHVILLE, Tenn. ( WATE ) — The state’s new free diaper program goes into effect Wednesday, Aug. 7 for families enrolled in TennCare or CoverKids healthcare, Governor Bill Lee’s office announced Tuesday.

“Strong families are the foundation for strong communities, and with our Strong Families Initiative, we’re taking bold steps to support families like never before by easing the financial burden on new mothers,” Lee said in a news release Tuesday. “Through responsible management of our TennCare program and the shared savings model, these crucial services will be provided at no additional cost to Tennesseans. Together, we’ll strengthen families and create a brighter future.”

How many diapers and how? The program is part of Lee’s Strong Families Initiative. It will provide 100 diapers per month to participating families. TennCare is the first Medicaid program in the nation to offer the benefit, thanks to the state’s TennCare III Medicaid waiver, which rewards Tennessee through shared savings.

Which diapers? The brands of diapers to be provided are select lines and sizes of Huggies and Cuties; however, other brands including Pampers and Luvs will be added over time. TennCare is partnering with pharmacies across the state to give members easy access to the free diapers.

How can participating families sign up for free diapers? Governor Lee’s office said Tuesday that TennCare or CoverKids members can walk into any participating pharmacy and show their child’s OptumRx TennCare pharmacy card or provide their child’s social security number at the pharmacy. For new parents waiting on a TennCare ID for their newborn, they can temporarily use their own TennCare pharmacy ID card or social security number. No prescription is required.
