LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Chance Newby regrets dropping out of college and wishes to go back to finish his education.

With a family to support, he thought those dreams were out of reach before learning of a program at his work, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, that lets him do it all.

“Oh, it’s night and day really,” Chance Newby, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing employee, said.

Newby was once a general manager at a furniture store, and now takes on a new role. This new position allows him to get the education he always dreamt of and support his family as a full-time employee.

“When I was younger, I didn’t finish school,” Newby said. “This is kind of getting to go back and finish something I started when I was younger…I don’t think I was ready. I was young. I didn’t really know exactly what I wanted to do. And I always kind of regretted it.”

Despite wanting to finish school, Newby shared the worries of many: how to properly support a family, three kids and a wife, while having to take time off of work for school.

“With kids, everything’s expensive, so,” Newby said. “They’re into sports, they have school activities. And, one of them is about to get into driving, so, of course, you got to save up for the car and all.”

Mazda Toyota Manufacturing squashed those worries for Newby. Three days a week he works at a plant. The other two days he attends class. All the while, he gets paid as a full-time employee and receives the benefits of a full-time employee. The icing on the cake? The company pays for the entire tuition as well.

“That has really allowed me to continue to save and provide for them,” Newby said. “And, without the program, there’s no way that I would’ve been able to accept it, because I would have been losing too much income.”

8 to 10 applicants are selected from the company for the program each year. The selected employees are enrolled into the FAME Program at Calhoun Community College which allows them to work and learn simultaneously.

Doors across the company will open for Newby once he finishes his education and receives his Journeyman Card and certification. This will set him up for a future of growth and success.

Newby shared that he sees himself in his son, making this a journey for both of them. He wants to show his son that a college education is not the only path to take after high school and that you can achieve your goals and support your family all at once.
