MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — Mars Hill came out swinging to open the 2024 high school football season, defeating Madison Academy 34-7 Friday night.

Jaxon Penn scored first for the Panthers giving them a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers pushed that lead to 13-0 in the second quarter when William Mann muscled his way across the goal line.

Alex Crider hit Michael Wiggins for the Mustangs lone score of the night.

After the game, Mars Hill Head Coach Darrell Higgins said his team was determined to finish the Mustangs off after not being able to do so last season.

“It was a great game, you know, we had a lot of adversity going at halftime, but our team was determined to come out here and finish it off like we didn’t do last year,” said Higgins. “We had a lot of motivation to come out and play really well and they did that and I’m really proud of them. I told them this game here is really whether we win big, lose big, whatever. It’s just something to get us better. And so, you know, this was a great first start, but we got to get a lot better.”

Mars Hill will take on Russellville next week at home while Madison Academy will look to bounce back against Randolph.
