Moulton City employee arrested for marijuana in work truck

MOULTON, Ala. (WHNT) — The Moulton Police Department (MPD) says a city employee has been charged with possession of marijuana after it was found in his city vehicle.

Don Cornelius Mitchell is charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after police said they found a backpack containing marijuana was found in his work truck.

Jail records show Mitchell was arrested Tuesday.

The department said the arrest came after they were advised a city employee, identified as Mitchell, was possibly in possession of marijuana after another city employee and a citizen reported they had smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from his work vehicle.

Officers, along with Mayor Roger Weatherwax and Mitchell’s supervisor, then found him at Moulton Memory Gardens.

According to authorities, when Mitchell was confronted about the accusation he said he had a backpack in his work truck that contained a large amount of marijuana. After a search, police said they found a large plastic container with a large quantity of marijuana along with several plastic baggies.

MPD said Mitchell was placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Jail without incident.

Moulton Police Chief Craig Knight said that while it is unfortunate that a city employee was arrested, MPD will uphold the law regardless of who the person is or what job title they hold.

The chief said Mitchell has been placed on administrative leave by Mayor Weatherwax until further notice.
