DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Savarius Evans is only a sophomore, but he’s no stranger to the big games having played varsity football since eighth grade for Decatur Heritage Christian Academy.

Fresh off a near 300-yard, five-touchdown performance, Evans has established himself as the workhorse for his team’s offense. The power back enters his 3rd year as a starter and is eager to bulldoze his team to a successful season.

Evans realized his dreams when he first picked up a football at six years old.

He’s become one of the most versatile running backs in the Tennessee Valley who knows his first college scholarship is around the corner.

“I already know that things are going to come, I’m just going to keep working doing what I’m doing helping my team,” Evans said. “We’re all trying to chase that blue map. I’m just going to keep grinding and we’re going to keep working as a team.”

The 16-year-old has been playing varsity football since eighth grade with his coaches considering him is a kid who gives it his all both on and off the field.

What stands out among many things for Decatur Heritage Football Head Coach Nikita Stover is Evans’ maturity.

“He’s always been mature, even in the classroom good grades, great kid that never gets in trouble and he always puts hard work first and he knows what it takes,” Stover said. “He wants to get to college, and he knows what it takes to get there.”

Evans credits his family, coaching staff, and many others for their help in making him the football player he is today.

He and the Eagles have their sights set on taking the Decatur Heritage Football Program to its first-ever state championship.

“I just got to get better and just stay on the path that I’m on, just don’t do nothing wrong you know focus on my grades, focus on school, and just focus on football,” Evans said.

Evans’ squad will hit the road to take on Addison on Friday night with the hopes of coming out with a victory to remain undefeated on the season.
