HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Heading into the long Labor Day weekend many have plans to spend time outdoors. Make sure to stay weather-aware. While the weekend won’t be a washout, storms will be possible during the second half of the day.

A low-pressure system will track north of the area this weekend with a trailing cold front forecast to push through Sunday. The cold front passage will support a more widespread chance for rain and storms.

Severe drought conditions worsen in North Alabama

The frontal passage will also bring slightly cooler air into the region. Highs heading into the new week will range from the mid to upper 80s.

The mornings are forecast to start mainly dry on Saturday and Sunday. With dew points forecast to be in the 70s, it will stay humid and uncomfortable. The increased amount of moisture in the atmosphere will also support localized heavy rain.

Scattered showers and isolated storms will begin developing during the afternoon and evening this weekend. The strongest storms that develop will be capable of strong winds, frequent lightning, heavy rain and small hail.

The latest drought monitor update on Thursday shows that drought conditions across the Tennessee Valley have worsened.

Tropical activity is increasing in the Atlantic

Severe drought conditions are now occurring in counties west of I-65. These counties are highlighted in orange. The remainder of the area is currently experiencing moderate drought to abnormally dry conditions.

With minimal rain in August, the rain deficit increased for the entire region, expanding the drought. During the Labor Day weekend, any rain locations record will be very beneficial.
