DECATUR, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Decatur Police Department (DPD) says a woman has been charged after attacking an elderly woman Saturday morning.

According to police, at around 7:15 a.m., 32-year-old Mary Hughes assaulted an elderly woman with a hammer before leaving the scene in a vehicle at Line St. NE and Market St. NE.

DPD says a witness yelled at Hughes to stop and followed her in their vehicle until police arrived.

Officers say when they arrived, they found an elderly woman suffering from multiple injuries. She was then transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

Later on, officers say they stopped the vehicle Hughes was in and charged her with first-degree assault. Hughes was booked into the Morgan County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Hughes was previously charged with second-degree domestic violence – assault on Sunday, Aug. 25 after stabbing a man. Court documents show she was released on a $10,000 bond on Thursday.

Obviously being out on bond for a previous attack hasn't slowed her down. Why not make this bond high enough that she can't get out and kill someone.
