    Huntsville election winners and runoffs announced at special city council meeting

    HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) – Two runoff elections will be held later this month in Huntsville’s District 1 after candidates for city council and the board of education failed to secure enough votes to win.

    During a special-called city council meeting on Tuesday, results from the August 27 municipal election were finalized, with winners in both races in District 5.

    Devyn Keith and Michelle Watkins will face off for the District 1 city council seat .

    Three people were vying for the District 1 City Council seat with Watkins going up against two-term incumbent Devyn Keith and retired army colonel Reggie McKenzie. Watkins received 1963 votes compared to Keith’s 1619 votes and McKenzie’s 383 votes.

    Chaundra Jones and Pat King both got under 40% in the election and will now fight to represent the district in the Huntsville Board of Education seat. Claudia Harris and Will Culver also ran, but combined they received less than 27% of the vote.

    John Meredith will serve another term on the Huntsville City Council , representing District 5. Meredith defeated challenger Kim Caudle Lewis with 1,310 votes to Lewis’s 785.

    Carlos Matthew will also remain in his District 5 seat on the Huntsville Board of Education after he received over 59% of the vote to beat challenger Zara Broadenax.
