HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The man charged with capital murder for the 2023 shooting death of a Huntsville Police officer is asking a Madison County Judge to change the venue of his trial.

In a handwritten motion, Juan Laws says he can not receive a fair trial in Madison County due to pretrial publicity and local prejudice within the community. Laws claims that violates his right to an impartial jury.

Laws is charged with the capital murder of HPD officer Garrett Crumby in 2023.

On March 28, 2023, HPD said that Crumby, along with fellow officer Albert Morin, was shot by Laws when they responded to a shots fired call at the Governors House Apartments. There they located a female victim.

Laws is awaiting a mental competency exam and does not currently have a trial date set.
