( WHNT ) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall for a Volkswagen car defect in which the doors could open while driving.

On September 4, NHTSA posted a recall for Volkswagen ID.4 cars made from 2021-2024. On the NHTSA website, it says the door handles may get water trapped in the circuit board leading to a ‘open command’ being triggered.

The NHTSA said Volkswagen has not issued a ‘stop drive’ for this recall. However, if the malfunction affects your car, drivers may notice an audible clicking noise, similar to the sound of a door being unlocked/locked.

Should this issue occur in your car, customers are advised to contact a local Volkswagen dealer to have the car inspected.

As of now, there is no remedy other than Volkswagen dealers inspecting and replacing door handles and updating the vehicle software, free of charge.

“Volkswagen is working diligently to make the recall remedy available as soon as possible,” the NHTSA recall document stated.

There are roughly 119,000 ID.4 vehicles that could be affected by this defect. In the NHTSA frequently asked question (FAQ) sheet, cars in the U.S. and Canada could be affected by this specific issue. The FAQ sheet says the U.S. has about 98,806 cars in the recall list and Canada has around 20,602 cars issued in this recall.

In February, Volkswagen was notified of several complaints about door handle parts that were made after countermeasures were implemented by suppliers.

Despite this recall, Volkswagen said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries because of this defect. Owners are expected to be notified about this recall in November.
