LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) says an inmate at the county jail has been charged with assaulting a corrections officer.

LCSO said on Saturday, Sept 14, a sheriff’s corrections officer was doing a routine check of a cellblock when he was attacked by an inmate Nathan Harville.

According to the sheriff’s office, Harville pushed the officer into an open cell and began striking him in the face. LCSO said Harville then tried to gain control of the officer’s radio, ultimately taking the mic cord and attempting to choke him.

The sheriff’s office said the officer was able to radio for help and other officers responded and were able to secure Harville.

The officer was treated at Athens Limestone Hospital for a facial cut, resulting in 10 stitches, along with other cuts to his head and arm, according to authorities.

LCSO said Harville has been in the county jail for 670 days awaiting trial on a felony distribution of a controlled substance charge. The sheriff’s office said since then he had been charged with nine other crimes, seven of them violent, including escape, assaults, and possession of contraband weapons.

According to court records, Harville was charged with escape after attempting to escape the custody on Wednesday May 3, 2023.

LCSO said at the time that corrections officers were transporting around 20 inmates to the courthouse from a transport van when Harville ran away from the group. Authorities said he was then spotted on the roof of a nearby building by a nearby citizen.

Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin was brought up to the roof with the help of the Athens Fire Department and took Harville back into custody.
