MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has identified the inmate charged after attacking a corrections officer at the Morgan County Jail on Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as Jason Oneal Stovall, 41, of Decatur. Stovall had been in the Morgan County Jail on homicide charges, according to MCSO.

Authorities said on Tuesday, Stovall broke the sprinkler head in his cell causing it to flood the floor. The sheriff’s office said he was isolated in the rec yard while the cell was cleaned and repaired.

When those repairs were complete, MCSO said Stovall was directed to return and he initially complied. The sheriff’s office said when Stovall walked towards the open door he struck a corrections officer in the head and continued to attempt to beat the officer.

According to authorities Stovall was tazed with little effect but was ultimately subdued when additional officers arrived.

MCSO said investigators are charging Stoval with second-degree assault.
